OSSATRON
Ossatron is a means of delivering extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT. The electrohydraulic machine, which Dr. Greg describes as "a big spark plug in water," delivers ultrasonic shock waves - much like lithotripsy used for breaking kidney stones. An electrical spark within a water-filled chamber causes vaporization of water molecules and effectively creates an explosion within the chamber, sending shock wave energy into the adjacent tissue. When 1,500 such shock waves are directed at the plantar fascial tissue along the base of the foot, it tends to stimulate healing.
The Ossatron works by disrupting the ligamentous tissue which allows for the return of new blood to flow to the plantar fascia. The outpatient procedure takes about 20 minutes and patients can have general anethesia or receive an ankle block. Although most cases of plantar fasciitis can be managed with orthotics and anti-inflammatories, the Alvines say Ossatron is a promising new option for those with intractable pain.
